Regulating Short-Term Rentals (STRs) in Manitoba
An interesting article about STRs in the Winnipeg Free Press today touches on the usual aspects such as primary residence requirements, impact on housing affordability and availability, impact on residential communities, etc, but highlights the lack of mention during the municipal elections. https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/opinion/analysis/2022/09/27/short-term-rentals-need-regulation
Note that this isn't just a City of Winnipeg issue, but one that affects most municipalities in the Province. Also, this is not just an issue for condos, since single family homes and cottages can also become STRs. As well, based on the experiences in other jurisdictions, sometimes rental units become STRs, even without the knowledge of the unit owner.
Now that we're into the main phase of municipal elections throughout the Province, be sure to ask the candidates for council or mayor about their views on the topic. If this is an important topic for you, make sure the candidates know that it is an important topic for you.
