CCI MB Covid-19 Bulletin

By CCI MB Communications Committee | Other articles by CCI MB Communications Committee | Feature

DISCLAIMER: Note that CCI Manitoba is not an organization that can provide medical advice or legal advice, nor is CCI a regulatory body that can direct condominium corporations to action. Also, the Covid-19 situation is very dynamic and the information presented here may be outdated by the time of publication of this newsletter edition.

We are in a pandemic situation and we all should be concerned about staying healthy and keeping safe. Condominium corporations should keep abreast of the quickly changing status of the Covid-19 pandemic and plan accordingly for their communities. Monitoring reliable sources of updated information is key. Two sources that should be used are the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/2019-novel-coronavirus-infection.html#a1 and the Province of Manitoba https://manitoba.ca/covid19/. These sites will provide the best guidance to keep healthy and slow the spread of the virus.

The best sources of information pertaining to condominium corporations can be found in the CCI-National Resource Centre https://www.cci.ca. The site has postings dealing with contingency planning for AGMs, risks and issues related to common areas, posters that can be put up in your building, handling financial matters such as collection of common element fee payments and the like.

Specific to the Manitoba condominium corporations, CCI Manitoba held a webinar on Friday April 17th to review the situation and provide some guidance. The recording is on the CCI Manitoba homepage https://cci-manitoba.ca under the News & Updates “Webinar Recording - CONDOS & COVID-19 - Friday, April 17, 2020” and includes the following topics:

  • AGMs and other meetings;
  • Common expenses and financial concerns;
  • Social distancing and privacy
  • Contractors and Maintenance
  • Common elements

Additional, many municipalities have their own Covid-19 updates online, such as:

• Brandon http://www.brandon.ca/covid-19-updates
• Dauphin https://www.dauphin.ca/emergency-services/covid-19-information/
• Morden https://www.mymorden.ca/covid19
• Portage La Prairie http://www.city-plap.com/cityplap/covid-19/
• Selkirk https://www.myselkirk.ca/covid19/
• Steinbach https://www.steinbach.ca/#covid-19-city-of-steinbach-response
• The Pas http://www.townofthepas.ca
• Thompson https://www.thompson.ca/p/covid-19
• Winkler https://www.cityofwinkler.ca/p/covid-19
• Winnipeg https://winnipeg.ca/emergweb/covid-19/default.stm

The risks associated with Covid-19 vary with the type of condominium community, whether bare-land, townhouse or apartment style. Risk considerations must also take into account the demographics of the community, in terms of the age of individual residents, any underlying health issues, lack of social supports from family and friends, mobility issues and the like. In these uncertain times there is a lot to think about. Hopefully the above information will keep you and your condominium community healthy, safe and secure.

Respectfully,

BOARD OF DIRECTORS CCI Manitoba
