President's Report - Spring 2020
By Maureen Hancharyk | Other articles by Maureen Hancharyk | Regular Column
At the time of writing this report, we are still in the pandemic lockdown and very uncertain of when some of the restrictions may be lifted. Delivery of this newsletter may be one of the casualties, but we are proceeding and hope to deliver as many as possible.
Business, as everyone knows, is definitely very different, but we here at CCI, Manitoba Chapter are continuing to serve our members in some new and innovative ways of reaching out.
Due to the public health orders, our Lunch and Learns education events were cancelled for the months of March and April, and refunds were made to all who had previously registered. The Education Committee is in the process of preparing webinars on the two issues that were previously offered, Insurance Claims and AirBnB. E-mails will be sent out with information on dates and times, and how to access the webinars.
A President’s Forum that is usually held in April was not scheduled. If possible, a President’s Forum will be scheduled in the fall.
CCI has been regularly posting updates concerning Covid19 issues on our CCI website where you will also find links to the CCI National website and resource centre. On the CCI National website you what’s happening in other provinces with regard to condominium issues and the pandemic.
Doug Forbes and Delaney Vun, from our CCI Manitoba Board of Directors, hosted a 90-minute webinar on Covid19 for members and non-members of our Chapter. It was well received and was attended by over 100 people. Participants had the opportunity to ask questions and most were answered during the webinar. Those questions that were not answered during the webinar have been posted on our CCI Manitoba website with their answers along with a video recording of the webinar. I invite you to visit the website and watch the webinar if you were unable to attend.
A shout out to all of the Property Managers who always work so hard for their condominium corporations as well as helping us get the CCI messages out. Alongside other essential workers during this pandemic, your work is so very much appreciated. Thanks for all you do always, but especially during these trying times.
And on the theme of being grateful which is especially important now, CCI, Manitoba Chapter wishes to thank all those who helped us claim a victory in the recent City of Winnipeg budget proposal to end garbage pickup at multi-family dwellings. We couldn’t have done it without you. To the property managers who helped us get the message out, to the unit owners who bombarded city councillors with emails in protest of the proposal, to the media that helped get our message out and to our Board of Directors at CCI, Manitoba Chapter who worked tirelessly on this issue. A huge thank you to all.
Being actively involved on campaigns takes a lot of work and many owners who became actively involved on the “garbage issue” are now interested in helping CCI on committees working on these type of issues in the future. We welcome your support. Please contact us if you are interested in serving on a committee or you may want to consider running for election to our CCI Board of Directors. The elections take place at our Annual General Meeting, which at this point in time is scheduled for September 23, 2020 at a location to be announced. We have not yet determined if we will actually go ahead with that date, but stay tuned and we will advise as soon as we are able to. It may be that large gatherings will still be restricted in the early fall.
I would also like to advise that Millanne Baxter is currently working as Chapter Administrator for CCI Manitoba. I’m sure many of you remember her as the “friendly face” of CCI. Millanne has been a huge help to us and we are thankful for her assistance and her many skills and talents.
Until next time, stay healthy and stay strong. Perhaps, there will be many positives that arise out of this time. New ways of doing things, new ways of connecting, and remembering to be grateful for all the things we used to take for granted.
